How to Optimize Your Joomla Website for Speed

1. Start from choosing the right Template

There are quite a lot of beautiful joomla templates that attract the eyes, but mainly cost you in performance of your site and clients don’t know this and frown when website get suspended. Some poorly designed templates may contain a lot of heavy design images and sometime scripts that make up most of the requests during the website’s loading time. So if you find your website constantly having CPU or RAM spike you may want to start your troubleshooting from your theme

2. Enable Joomla Cache

Our server come preinstalled with OptimumCache for speed but enabling one from jooma will also make a good advantage for your site. To enable the cache on your website, Go to global configuration -> System in your admin panel and then turn on the cache option on the right, this will cache your website pages when its visited and will load it way faster in the subsequent visits. But turn this off if your site pages have dynamic content present in it, which frequently changes for few seconds.

3. Disable unwanted components

Thousands of components exist that suit your needs and installing them may be tempting, some of these components are also responsible for slowing your website’s loading time and resource “CPU, Memory, IO, Entry Process” consumption. So uninstall the components that you don’t normally use or don’t think is that important.

4. Turn on Gzip Compression

This setting loads your page faster by compressing your website pages while its sent through the server. To activate this, go to Global Configurations -> Server and set Gzip compression to enable the page compression..

5. Install the PHPSpeedy Plugin

Joomla PHP Speedy Plug in, will allow you to modify each of its settings through its  parameters. Its a PHP library created and designed to optimize the loading speed of your PHP website. Hence its a script which compresses the JavaScript and CSS files in the template, and do the Gzip compression, there may be many plugins out there that do these functions separately, this plugin seems to be better.

6. Optimize your database.

The database consists of schema representing the format and tables in which the data is stored. So you will need to Optimize the tables and optimize the schema. The schema as mentioned is just a basic representation needs to be optimized just once, whereas the tables that are modified frequently need to be optimized regularly. In order to optimize the tables go to phpMyAdmin, select all tables, and click “optimize”.

7. Compress your images.

The images give life into your content, but at the same time will slow down the article loading time if not properly optimized. Even if you have placed an awesome pic in your content or waited lot of time editing to come up with a masterpiece image for your article, people may cancel the page if the loading time of the image eats up their time. So a better options is to optimize  your images and aim for a minimum size, for example try keeping PNG and JPEG size to 8-12Kb. Try using photoshop or fireworks to edit and save the images for better optimized image with the save for web option to use it in your website.

8. Enable caching for modules.

The modules that you have enabled in your website have an optional caching option that’s often set to disabled. Enable the caching option for all the modules you are using in your website to improve loading performance of your website’s modules.

9. Test using Firefox plugins.

Finally check out your site loading time frequently using the firefox plugin called  YSlow, an addon for firebug for Firefox which will help you to analyse your site for further improvements

10.  Upgrade your hosting plan

We do not necessary place hard limits on our hosting features but allocated resources may be limited for smaller package like vBasic hosting plan, so if you are hosted on that package and you constantly get your allocated server resources “CPU, Memory, IO, Entry Process” exhausted and get the 503 Error or slow site regardless of all optimization techniques employed, it means it is time to upgrade to a higher package that can take your high power web site without issue.
